Hoorah! Phil Noto’s art is amazing, as always – I’m so thrilled to see Mr. Priest working with someone completely worthy of his complicated storytelling and character development. I really like the main trio of characters – Black Bolt, Maximus, and Medusa, and am very excited to see how they fare in their own future! The whole question of slavery is very interestingly handled, as well – with the Unspoken King being a slippery, dangerous tyrant.

Review contains fairly detailed plot synopsis.
Reviewer seems to forget that earbuds have been around since about 2001, which in terms of things like Black Bolt’s age is “distant past”. đŸ™‚
The Inhumans are a bit of a blind spot for me; I’ve read the first 30 or so issues of the original Lee/Kirby FF but not the rest. (I wish they’d release collections printed on newsprint; the old 4-color process looks awful on glossy paper.)
Sure enjoyed #1, though; I particularly liked the dialogue that evokes but doesn’t imitate Stan Lee and then the sudden contrast of Alpha showing up and talking like a Priest character.
I’m bummed by the choice to put the story in modern times.
It makes no sense. It adds nothing. It clashes with the classic Kirby issues.
Solicitations tell us that Spider-Man will appear… I wonder how that will work. Peter was in High School when Black Bolt was an adult. Black Bolt is now a kid. So either we’ll see a time-jump to his adulthood or continuity just doesn’t mean anything in this book.
Besides those issues, both art and writing were fantastic. Best book that month.
As I noted above, you can have iPods and earbuds 16 years ago. Black Bolt isn’t a “kid,” he’s a young adult, maybe 16. So if Peter was in high school even 10 years ago, Black Bolt would still be an adult of 23-25 (and act a LOT older than his years due to the weight of the crown).
16 years ago is still not right. This story should be set in the 60’s.
it should be set further in the past black bolt is suppose to be close 100 years old
OK, so there’s what amounts to an Inhuman equivalent of the old mutant inhibitor collars that neutralizes powers (which is a pretty good trick to have a universal such, given that many Inhuman powers are directly due to non-human physiology. I mean, does Triton suddenly stop breathing water and start breathing air again (remember, he needs the tubing system he wears to be able to live outside of water for any significant time)?). And Blackagar starts talking.
But for years, the big thing about him was that he could not talk, period, without unleashing the power of his voice. Over 40 or so years of stories, he was shown getting to say fewer words total than are in a paragraph of this post. But there’s apparently tech that’s not considered “OMG! Where did *that* come from?” level that lets him talk. And we’re supposed to believe he never used it since? Either to talk to Medusa and others occasionally or installed in Maximus’ frequent series of cages to shut off his mental domination power?
Maybe the tech is actually an extension of someone’s Inhuman power (like hoodie guy), and can’t be reproduced once he’s out of the picture?
Welp, in #2 we see who made the tech, and why it might not be desirable to keep using (good chance it has some sort of nasty long term side effect).
if u have any marvel projects after inhumans would one of them have a place for The Foreigner?
A double day of Mr. Priest’s work today! Very exciting!
