January 2018 comics thread

Priest’s still pretty busy (JL is twice monthly!), so he might not answer any questions here for a while, but in the meantime talk amongst yourselves.

Well, I know I’m really excited about the next arc of Deathstroke! The Batman/Damian plot sounds really intriguing, and I hope to see more of the awesome dynamic from Deathstroke #4-5!

    • Dave Van Domelen says:

Yep, looks promising. (Too bad the very mention of Damian attracted a spambot, or a live person who posts as if they were a badly coded spambot.)

      • Ian Miller says:

I honestly don’t get it. I have zero doubts that it’s all going to be a hoax, and just Priest’s awesome idea to get Batman and Slade to fight without having to kill one or the other. And it gets to the root of family. I’d also like it if it shook some of Damian’s really obnoxious “pure blood” snobbery and cruelty to non-blood Robins and Batfamily members. Dunno if that’s on Priest’s mind, but I’d love it. 🙂

        • Priest Priest says:

Ian (sorry for the VERY late reply)– yes, all of it is on my mind. A hoax? LOL! Maybe. I can tell you, as of this posting, I have no idea who Talia’s baby daddy is. That’s not my decision to make, DC will tell me. But, hand raised, I honestly don’t know and, presuming DC won’t pull the trigger on this is kind of a gamble…

          • Ian Miller says:

I mean, to me, the real “meat” of this story is the comparison between Slade and Bruce. Bruce has adopted so many kids, and I have no doubt he loves them all deeply, even though, as you say, he can’t say it, so I’m not worried that Damian will be cast out. My engagement is in the examination of what sets Batman apart from Slade, despite their similarities. That’s all I meant by my “hoax” comment. 🙂

          • Dave Van Domelen says:

Although, at the end of this month’s issue it looks like maybe Damian has a brother he wasn’t aware of….

    • Lia says:

Well… Slade is always my favorite character in DC, but i hate Damian. The whole Batman/Damian thing still interesting… a bit. I can’t be excited, because obvious, that in the end, this will be a fake thing. So this just an unnecessary story, a waste of time.
Still give it a chance. Of course. Favorite writer, favorite book.

      • Dave Van Domelen says:

I figure there’s no such thing as an “unnecessary” story or an intrinsically bad plot, just ones that are harder to pull off…but when they *are* done well, they’re even better for the higher degree of difficulty. Even an “idiot plot” (one where the plot can only work if everyone involved is an idiot) isn’t impossible to do entertainingly.

        • Lia says:

Yeah. Right. I think. I just a little… unsure, when Damian come the picture. Will wait and see how this turn out. This book never a disappointment, so i don’t have a real reason to be negative.

  2. Dave Van Domelen says:

At this point, it’s pretty clear there’s a bunch of new people who are Googling for places to post about Damian, and many of them are in the “the sky is falling” camp or even the “I will hurl insults because I just know I’ll hate the story” camp. I’m not going to approve any new posters coming here to talk about Damian until AFTER the story has seen print. If the al Ghul family tree fanclub wants to discuss the story once it’s out, fine. If Priest wants to approve the posts himself, fine. But I’m not inclined to let the board turn into another chapter in the “I just know they’ll treat Damian badly” ongoing flamewar. I can also unapprove posters who have been approved in the past if they start something.

Civil discussion and disagreement are fine. Shouting “it will suck!” or “you better not!” to the rafters months before the story has been told are not fine.

    • Eric C. Mason says:

Priest has the utmost respect for the characters he writes, even the minor characters. He treats them all like people, and he treats people the way he wants to be treated. Knowing everyone has a reason, a backstory, internal motivations, and a purpose greater than themselves. But, he’ll be just as quick to call bullshit if he sees pretension and nonsense in fictional heroes as he does on real people and himself, for that matter. He’ll treat them with respect, by banishing nonsense as quickly as he can. It is his way.

    • Dave Van Domelen says:

(Note: it’s almost entirely one guy who keeps using multiple fake names a day at this point, the other people who came here solely to doomsay about the story do seem to be waiting. And yes, we can tell when someone is sockpuppeting.)

  3. The DeathSkeleton says:

I am excited for the Deathstroke vs Batman series. I just hope there won’t be much plot induced stupidity like Batman somehow being as strong or as fast as Deathstroke unless it gets explained.

I actually have a question relevant to the Deathstroke mythos, how Strong is Dr Ikon now? He seems to be a Hulk inspired character so is it fair to assume he is comparable to the hulk in strength?

    • Priest Priest says:

Y’know, I haven’t figured that out but, I’d assume Dr. Ikon or “Doomstroke” as we like to call him, is significantly LESS powerful than the Hulk. But maybe, say, 10x Deathstroke.

  4. Richard Haussmann says:

Is Priest planning on sharing his thoughts on the Black Panther film in February? Maybe an Alamo Drafthouse screening with comments afterward? (I hope he gets some kind of acknowledgement in the film.)

  5. Ian Miller says:

Really bummed about the “No Justice” news, but at least I have Batman vs. Deathstroke to look forward to!

  6. albert says:

Hey Mr.Priest are you going to continue your JL run in some shape or form? Im really loving what you’re doing but it was just announced that Snyder was going to write the main book in April and I’d hate to see you go.
